Friends this is my review of the book The Last Man by Vince Flynn, which I read recently. There is a popular saying that “it does what it says on the tin” and this is the case with this book. It does what it says on the cover.
The book is a thriller about the Hero Mitch Rapp, and his personal mission to kill all American “baddies” he comes across. Cross him and you wind up dead, and his reputation goes before him. The baddies just quake in their boots when his name is mentioned. So this book is set in the present day with America pulling out of Afghanistan. The CIA is helping to set up the new government by paying the terrorists to change sides and become good and loyal citizens. Of course when there is lots of money slushing around people want to pinch it, especially if there are corrupt politicians. The story crosses over the boarder into Pakistan, and its secret services. Are they trying to get a hold of the money as well. Add a contract assassin that has been given the task of killing a high ranking CIA officer as well and you have all the ingredients for a fast moving thriller. Of course the real puzzling is just how true is all this. Is it a complete work of fiction or based on some truth? My only down point is what a sad reflection of life in our times this book reflects, if that is what it does do? Money is portrayed as the ultimate god, which is just not the case. The thought that people would even consider doing such things for money is in my view mind blowing. This was book 40 week 31 fiction 37 (10 on audio) non fiction 3

This is my review of the book Protect and Defend by Vince Flynn – (This is what I was coming to write when I found that my previous review of Huntingtower was not there)
This is a book that has an end point and works directly towards that end point, but it does explore the ideas of what is legal and right when trying to get information out of someone – does the end justify the means. Iran has a nuclear facility hidden in the centre of one of it's cities – deep underground and an Israeli agent manages to destroy it, creating a tomb for all the people working inside and a radioactive environmental disaster. The American's get blamed for the action saying it is the result of a spy plane bombing. Things quickly start to get out of hand as the United Nations condems the attacks, and Iran threatens to cut off the oil supply to the west. The Lebanese terrorist Imad Mukhtar then enters the fray and wants to take advantage of the quickly deteriorating situation. OF course there is only one person that the American President can call on to help and that is Mitch Rapp, the CIA superhero. He goes on the rampage against the plotting terrorists, with the motto shoot first ask questions afterwards, with the aim of averting total meltdown of the west. All good fun as a thriller, for Bank Holiday reading. This was book 23 week 17 fiction 21 (4 on audio) non fiction 2 Friends
This is my review of the book Act of Treason by Vince Flynn, which I have read recently. It was interesting to contrast this book, which is all about life in America and American politics, to that of a fictitious Britain as described by C J Sansom in Dominion. In both cases the use of disposing of the opposition by killing them off is the norm. It is just that in this book by Vince - it is meant to be loosely based on real life, so it does make one question how often the idea of disposing of ones opponents really does happen, and is not just a fictitious idea. Still getting back to the review of the book, there are two weeks to go before the presidential election, and sadly one of the potential candidates motorcade is ambushed by a terrorist bomb. Several people are killed, but not the candidate, who is then carried to victory by a sympathy vote. Who planted the bomb, on the surface it seemed to be al-Qaeda, but then the CIA is given evidence that calls this all into question? Super hero Mitch Rapp, America's top counter-terrorism expert is asked to solve the mystery, and it must be done before the new president is sworn in. It is an enjoyable easy read that romps along at a good pace. This was book 2 week 1 – fiction 2 (0 on audio) non fiction 0 This is my review of the Book Separation of Power by Vince Flynn.
Evidently one of my friends had looked at my reviews as I had read my first Vince Flynn book a few months ago, and ended the review saying that “if I see another Vince Flynn book I will read it”, as they have given me three new Vince Flynn books to read.Well I have now read another book. This book was set in time before the book mentioned above, and is probably the start of the series about Mitch Rapp. The book is different though to normal action thrillers. Yes Mitch was given a task to do – get some parts of a nuclear bomb behind enemy lines. But that was just the sub plot. The main plot of the book was all about Political double crossing, deceit and murder in the corridors of power in America. It does seem ironic to a non American, that the whole process of government and enquiry/hearings into appointments is meant to stop corruption, but the main thrust of the book is how this process is being subverted on two fronts. One to avoid public scrutiny and the other to use it as a weapon of embarrassment, ultimately against the President, as it is the president who makes the choice of person for the Office being considered. Of course the other interest in the book was that as it was written in 2001, Saddam had not been conquered, and his “Weapons of Mass Destruction” were perceived as a real threat, which fictional characters in books can try to destroy. An enjoyable read - this was book 47 week 32 fiction 44 (13 on audio) non fiction 3 This book though a mystery thriller, was a complete contrast to my previous book the Parsifal Mosaic. The story line was straight forward going from A to B. The White House was taken over by terrorists, and the president trapped in his secret bunker.
The hero of the story Mitch Rapp, the CIA's top counter-terrorism agent and he has to get into the White House without being detected and find out what is going on. The president is not as safe as everyone thinks, and time is running out. It was easy to pick up between boring parts of the Olympics Though the book was easy reading and I zipped through it, if I see another Vince Flynn book I will read it.
